The California Department of Insurance is spearheading efforts to ensure the availability of commercial insurance for zero-emission heavy-duty trucks as the state moves towards banning diesel vehicles. With the enactment of Assembly Bill 844, Governor Gavin Newsom has urged action to facilitate affordable insurance for zero-emission heavy vehicles.
Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is taking a proactive approach to identify solutions before significant obstacles arise. "We are committed to accelerating the transition to clean air technology by ensuring truck fleets have affordable insurance costs."
The Department of Insurance is already working to meet legislative requirements, issuing a notice before February 1 to collect data from insurance companies. The goal is to create a list of insurers offering coverage for zero-emission trucks.
To address current and future gaps in insurance for new technologies in heavy-duty trucks before January 1, 2025, the department must assess the number of companies providing insurance for these zero-emission fleets.
With this proactive approach, California aims to pave the way for a successful transition to zero-emission heavy vehicles.
