trucks are equipped with more and more systems designed to help drivers stay safe on the road. Adaptive cruise control, lane-departure wa
ings, collision alerts and automatic braking are already found on many trucks. But there is an important risk: believing these features can replace the driver’s attention.
FMCSA promotes the use of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in commercial motor vehicles because they can help reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities. These technologies include automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot detection and adaptive cruise control.
For example, adaptive cruise control can automatically adjust speed to maintain a set following distance from the vehicle ahead. Lane-keeping assistance can make small steering corrections to keep the truck in its lane, while automatic braking can intervene when a potential collision is detected.
However, NHTSA wa
s that today’s driver-assistance systems do not make a vehicle fully autonomous. Even with a Level 2 system capable of controlling steering, acceleration and braking at the same time, the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over.
This is especially important in a heavy truck. Cameras, radar and sensors can help, but road conditions, traffic, weather or signage may still require an immediate human response.
Technology should work like a co-driver, not a replacement. Knowing what each system can do, understanding its limitations, and keeping your hands and attention ready to respond remain the responsibility of the professional driver.
