Volvo Trucks North America has announced the availability of its new D13 VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) engine in the completely redesigned Volvo VNR and Volvo VNL models, reinforcing the company´s commitment to efficiency and sustainability in the transportation industry.
The D13 VGT is a direct-injection diesel engine with an inline six-cylinder configuration and a displacement of 12.78 liters. It offers multiple power ratings—405, 425, 435, and 455 horsepower—with torque ranging from 1,450 to 1,850 lb-ft. Key innovations include:
The use of a seven-wave piston optimizes air-fuel mixing, enhancing combustion efficiency. Additionally, a reduced piston height and longer connecting rod lower lateral pressure on the cylinder wall, reducing friction and improving overall performance.
The injectors feature smaller needle control valves, allowing for faster and more precise fuel flow control. This improves atomization, combustion efficiency, and engine performance.
The oil pump dynamically adjusts to the engine´s oil pressure demands, minimizing parasitic losses, reducing wear, and boosting overall efficiency.
Integration into Volvo VNR and VNL Models
The D13 VGT engine comes standard in the new Volvo VNR, which is designed for regional haul and urban delivery operations. The VNR has been redesigned by 90% compared to its predecessor, incorporating aerodynamic enhancements and fuel-efficient technologies that reduce fuel consumption and CO? emissions by up to 7.5%. It also offers flexible configurations, including 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4, to meet a variety of operational needs.
The launch of the D13 VGT underscores Volvo Trucks´ commitment to lowering operating costs and reducing environmental impact. According to Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America, improvements in the powertrain deliver up to a 3% gain in fuel efficiency over the previous generation. The engine also features a 24-volt electrical system, first introduced in the Volvo VNL, which supports lighter components and extends their lifespan by reducing amperage.
Customers can now order the D13 VGT engine in the latest Volvo VNR and VNL models through Volvo Trucks dealerships. Sales teams have been trained to advise customers on the engine´s capabilities and benefits, ensuring fleet operators can choose the best option for their specific needs.
With these innovations, Volvo Trucks continues to lead the way in delivering transportation solutions that balance performance, efficiency, and environmental responsibility—meeting the evolving demands of the industry.
