With less than 50 days until the 2024 presidential election, the financial backing from the trucking sector is leaning heavily towards former President Donald Trump. According to data from the Federal Election Commission, compiled by OpenSecrets, transportation companies and organizations have donated $8.8 million to political campaigns during this election cycle, with 84.93% of those contributions going to Republican candidates.
Trump tops the list of recipients with $733,918 from the transportation sector. Although no longer in the race, former Republican candidate Nikki Haley follows in second place with $103,145, while Vice President Kamala Harris has raised $102,321, significantly outpacing the $38,932 received by President Joe Biden.
Despite the strong support for the Republican Party, donations from the trucking industry in 2024 are significantly lower compared to previous cycles. In 2020, the industry contributed $19.5 million—nearly double the current amount.
The financial support from the trucking sector highlights the industry´s critical role in the economy and its interest in policies that favor the sector. These contributions not only reflect a political preference but also an intent to influence decisions that could directly impact their operations and regulations in the future.
