For a professional truck driver, taking your eyes off the road for just a few seconds can be enough to tu
a normal situation into an emergency. A cell phone is one of the biggest sources of distraction, but it is not the only one. Checking the GPS, changing the music, looking for something inside the cab or eating while driving can also dangerously reduce your attention.
In 2026, FMCSA reminded drivers that federal regulations prohibit commercial motor vehicle operators from using a hand-held mobile phone while driving. Texting or handling the device can also lead to penalties and, in cases involving repeated violations, can affect commercial driving privileges.
The problem goes beyond fines. A truck needs far more room than a passenger vehicle to react and come to a stop. If the driver is looking at a screen when traffic suddenly slows, an obstacle appears or a signal changes, those lost seconds can eliminate the margin needed to avoid a crash.
Distracted driving remains a conce
for enforcement agencies. During Operation Safe Driver Week, held July 12-18, 2026, CVSA included distracted driving among the risky behaviors officers were watching for, along with speeding, following too closely and unsafe lane changes.
The best prevention starts before you roll. Program your route, arrange anything you may need during the trip and use hands-free features when appropriate. If you need to type, look something up or handle anything that requires your attention, pull over in a safe place.
