Summer Blowouts: Peak Season for Tire Failures on Trucks and Trailers

Summer Blowouts: Peak Season for Tire Failures on Trucks and Trailers

Every summer, highways across Califo
ia and other states experience a significant increase in truck and trailer tire blowouts. High temperatures, long driving hours, overweight loads, poor tire maintenance, and lack of proper air pressure inspections make this one of the most dangerous seasons for heavy-duty tires.

When pavement reaches extreme temperatures, the heat transfers directly into the tires. If a tire has low pressure, uneven wear, or inte
al damage, the risk of a blowout increases considerably. Problems often go unnoticed until the driver hears the loud explosion while traveling at highway speeds.

In addition to the danger for the truck driver, a blowout can cause loss of control, damage to the tractor or trailer, destruction of nearby components, damage to air lines or suspension airbags, and even accidents involving other vehicles. On highways across the country, these incidents become especially common during the hottest months of the year.

Maintenance specialists recommend checking daily:

• Air pressure

• Tread depth

• Cuts or deformations

• Premature wear

• Valve condition

It is also important to inspect alignment, since uneven wear creates excessive heat buildup.

Another critical factor is tire age. Many drivers continue using old tires to save money, but high temperatures accelerate rubber deterioration and increase the risk of structural failure. Others repeatedly patch wo
tires that no longer have sufficient tread.

If a blowout occurs, experts recommend keeping a firm grip on the steering wheel, avoiding sudden braking, and reducing speed gradually until reaching a safe location.

During the summer, a simple preventive inspection can prevent thousands of dollars in damage and, more importantly, save lives on the road. This type of maintenance not only protects the truck — it also protects the driver and everyone sharing the highway.
