Strong Winds Can Toss Your Trailer Around Like a Piece of Paper

Strong Winds Can Toss Your Trailer Around Like a Piece of Paper

For a truck driver, wind may not seem like much of a threat until a sudden gust pushes the trailer unexpectedly. In Califo
ia, the risk increases during Santa Ana wind season. These winds are most common between September and May and can easily exceed 40 mph.

Trucks and trailers are especially vulnerable because of their large side surface area. When strong crosswinds hit, they can push the truck into another lane, make it harder to maintain control, and even cause a rollover—especially when the trailer is empty or carrying a light load. A sudden gust can tu
what seems like a normal drive into an emergency within seconds.

The National Weather Service recommends slowing down, keeping both hands firmly on the wheel, and increasing your following distance when strong gusts are present. It also wa
s that bridges, overpasses, open areas, and mountain passes can be especially dangerous because winds can hit harder and without wa
ing.

Before hitting the road, check the forecast and pay attention to any High Wind Wa
ings or Wind Advisories along your route. If you’re pulling an empty trailer, keep in mind that the lighter weight can make it harder to keep the trailer stable. Avoid sudden maneuvers and anticipate changes in wind direction when passing buildings, mountains, or large vehicles.

If the gusts become so strong that you can no longer safely stay in your lane, finding a safe place to pull over may be the best decision. No load or delivery is worth risking your truck, your cargo, or your life just to make it a few more miles.

On the road, clear skies don’t always mean safe driving conditions. When strong winds are blowing, caution remains a driver’s best tool.
