Safe Driver Week: Slow Down and Avoid Costly Tickets

Safe Driver Week: Slow Down and Avoid Costly Tickets

Every October, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) teams up with the Califo
ia Highway Patrol (CHP) to conduct Operation Safe Driver Week — a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing crashes caused by speeding and aggressive driving. For truck drivers in Califo
ia, this campaign is more than just a reminder — it’s an opportunity to avoid expensive tickets, improve your company’s safety score, and help keep everyone on the road safe.

Applicable Regulations

Under Califo
ia Vehicle Code (CVC §22406), any commercial truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,001 lbs. may not exceed 55 mph on highways unless otherwise posted. Ignoring this limit can result in fines of $500 or more, points on your CDL, and an increase to your CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) score — which can trigger more frequent roadside inspections for your company.

During this week, CHP officers also look for other safety violations, including seat belt use, distracted driving, and aggressive behavior. Any violations are reported to FMCSA and may impact your fleet’s safety rating.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

• Fines and penalties: Can put a dent in your paycheck.

• CSA score impact: Higher likelihood of audits and roadside inspections.

• Increased accident risk: Especially in construction zones and heavy traffic.

• Employment risk: Multiple serious violations can jeopardize a professional driver’s job.

Key Recommendations to Stay Compliant

1. Manage your speed: Use cruise control on open highways when safe, but slow down in curves, school zones, and congested areas.

2. Plan ahead: Leave early to avoid the pressure of racing the clock on deliveries.

3. Keep your equipment road-ready: Brakes, suspension, and tires must be in top condition to stop safely.

4. Avoid aggressive driving: Maintain at least a 4-second following distance behind the vehicle ahead.

5. Ongoing training: Attend company safety meetings and refreshers to stay updated on rule changes.

6. Maintain clean records: Document inspections and preventive maintenance — it’s your best proof of compliance if you’re pulled over.

Driving safely isn’t just about avoiding a ticket — it’s about making sure you and everyone else get home in one piece. This October, join the campaign and be part of the positive statistics!
