The FMCSA and CVSA continue to move forward with the development of so-called Level VIII Electronic Inspections, a new electronic inspection system that could completely change the way commercial trucks are monitored on the road.
This technology would allow DOT inspections to be conducted while the truck remains in motion, without the need to stop at weigh stations or traditional physical checkpoints. The system uses wireless data transmission between the vehicle, the ELD, and electronic inspection platforms.
The program is currently in a testing phase with limited participation from selected carriers and states, but federal authorities are already evaluating a possible nationwide expansion in the coming years.
Level VIII Electronic Inspections could automatically verify:
• CDL license
• Medical card
• Hours of service
• ELD status
• Operating authority
• USDOT registration
• UCR compliance
• Out-of-service orders
• Other real-time safety data
If the system detects possible violations or irregularities, the driver would be directed to a more detailed physical inspection. Vehicles without issues could continue traveling without stopping.
One of the most striking aspects for the industry is the enormous amount of information that could be monitored automatically. During tests conducted in 2024 and 2025, some fleets recorded tens of thousands of electronic data transfers in just a few months, far exceeding the volume of traditional manual inspections.
The CVSA also confirmed that the special focus of Roadcheck 2026 includes ELD tampering and falsification of electronic records, reflecting the growing federal interest in digital monitoring across the transportation industry.
While authorities say the technology will improve safety and reduce inspection times, many truck drivers are watching with conce
