With the arrival of summer, thousands of truck drivers across the United States face one of the most dangerous and least discussed risks in transportation: heatstroke inside the cab. During long workdays under extreme temperatures, the inside of a truck can quickly become a dangerous space for the driver's health.
In states such as Califo
ia, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas, outside temperatures can easily exceed 100 F during June, July, and August. However, the heat inside the cab can be much higher. Reports from transportation and delivery workers have shown interior temperatures above 120 F, and even 150 F in some units exposed to direct sunlight.
Specialists wa
that prolonged heat exposure can cause dehydration, physical exhaustion, dizziness, loss of concentration, and, in extreme cases, severe heatstroke that can put a driver's life at risk. Extreme heat also directly affects reaction time and increases fatigue behind the wheel. Road safety studies indicate that highway fatalities increase during heat waves.
Among the most common symptoms are:
• Headache
• Excessive sweating
• Blurred vision
• Weakness
• Cramps
• Confusion
• A feeling of fainting
Experts recommend several preventive measures for drivers:
• Always keep cold water inside the cab
• Avoid excessive energy drink consumption
• Take periodic breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
• Constantly check that the A/C system is working properly
• Wear lightweight clothing and light colors
• Do not ignore signs of extreme fatigue or dizziness
Drivers are also advised not to remain for long periods inside a parked cab under the sun, since temperatures can rise dangerously within minutes.
A truck driver's health depends not only on driving carefully, but also on recognizing that extreme heat can become a silent enemy on the road. In many cases, stopping for a few minutes and cooling down can prevent an accident or a serious medical emergency.
