In our previous edition, we discussed tire blowouts during the summer months, a problem that becomes increasingly common as temperatures rise to extreme levels. However, tires are not the only components affected by the heat. Summer conditions also put tremendous stress on one of the most critical systems in any truck: the engine cooling system.
During the summer months, especially on routes through Califo
ia, Arizona, Nevada, and other Southweste
states, engines operate under much harsher conditions. A seemingly minor issue can quickly lead to overheating, leaving a truck out of service and resulting in repair costs that can reach thousands of dollars.
Some of the most common causes of engine overheating include coolant leaks, wo
hoses, loose clamps, clogged radiators, faulty thermostats, and malfunctioning cooling fans. Many of these problems develop gradually and can easily go unnoticed during a routine inspection.
Drivers should pay close attention to wa
ing signs such as unusually high engine temperatures, visible coolant loss, steam coming from the engine compartment, or frequent activation of cooling-system wa
ing alarms.
Maintenance specialists recommend regularly checking coolant levels and condition, inspecting hoses and connections, cleaning the radiator, and ensuring that the cooling fan is operating properly. It is also important to follow the maintenance intervals recommended by the manufacturer.
A small coolant leak or a wo
hose may seem insignificant, but ignoring these issues can lead to severe engine damage, costly downtime, and expensive repairs. During the summer, prevention remains the best tool for staying on the road and avoiding situations where extreme heat tu
s a productive workday into an unexpected breakdown.
