Check Your Brakes in July—Or Pay the Ticket!

Check Your Brakes in July—Or Pay the Ticket!

Throughout July, California transportation authorities will intensify inspections of commercial vehicles as part of the Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection (VSSI) Program. These inspections will place special emphasis on brake systems—one of the most critical components for road safety. Brake failure can lead to serious accidents, highway fires, and costly fines.

California law sets clear requirements for proper brake system operation in heavy-duty vehicles. According to the California Vehicle Code (Sections 26450 to 26454), all trucks must be equipped with separate service and parking brake systems. These systems must be capable of bringing the vehicle to a complete stop from 20 miles per hour within a specified distance that varies based on the vehicle´s gross weight. If a truck´s brakes do not meet this standard, the driver may face steep fines and even vehicle impoundment.

Additionally, Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations mandates that brake hoses, tubing, and other components meet specific technical standards, including SAE J844 and FMVSS 106. A worn hose, air leak, or poorly adjusted brake can cause a truck to fail inspection and result in a citation.

Special enforcement efforts are underway in high-risk areas like Interstate 80 and Northern California´s mountainous regions. These zones are especially vulnerable to brake-related fires due to steep grades and extreme temperatures. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Caltrans require trucks in these areas to use designated brake check areas before continuing their route.

To avoid penalties and ensure road safety, drivers are urged to conduct routine brake inspections, especially before trips. Key elements to check include brake drums, auto-adjusters, and hoses. It´s also essential to maintain an up-to-date Commercial Vehicle Safety Inspection Program (CVSIP) certificate, which is mandatory for many operators under California´s updated inspection framework.

In short, complying with California´s brake regulations is not just a legal obligation—it´s a matter of professional responsibility. With heightened inspections taking place this July, preparation can mean the difference between a safe haul and an expensive violation.

Don´t risk your safety or your business—check your brakes today.
