From August 23 through 29, 2026, Brake Safety Week will take place, with inspections focused on commercial vehicle braking systems. This year, inspectors will pay special attention to brake drums and rotors, two critical components that help bring a truck to a safe stop.

A cracked drum, warped rotor, or contaminated braking surface can reduce stopping power, cause vibration, and increase stopping distance. In more serious cases, a damaged component can break apart while the truck is moving, damage nearby vehicles, and result in the truck being placed out of service.

Before hitting the road, check for visible cracks, broken parts, uneven wear, oil or grease contamination, and signs of overheating. A strong bu
ing smell, smoke around the wheels, grinding or metal-on-metal noises, or vibration when applying the brakes can also be wa
ing signs of a problem.

Do not forget to inspect brake lining thickness, air hoses, brake chambers, slack adjusters, and possible air leaks. Brakes that are out of adjustment or contaminated can cause one wheel to provide less braking force than the others, putting extra stress on the rest of the system.

On long downhill grades, avoid relying only on the brake pedal. Select the proper gear and use the engine brake to help control your speed. Riding the brakes continuously can create excessive heat and damage drums, rotors, and brake linings.

A daily visual inspection is important, but it does not replace a professional brake inspection. If you notice vibration, loss of air pressure, unusual noises, or reduced braking response, stop operating the truck and have the system checked by a qualified mechanic.

Preparing before an inspection is not just about avoiding fines or delays. Keeping your brakes in good condition helps protect your load, your CDL, and everyone sharing the road.
