Getting up several times during the night to use the bathroom may seem like a minor inconvenience, especially if you spend long hours on the road. But when it starts happening more often, your urine stream becomes weaker, or you have trouble starting to urinate, it’s worth paying attention because there could be a prostate problem.
One of the most common conditions is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes more common after age 50. As the prostate grows, it can put pressure on the urethra and make it harder to empty the bladder. Symptoms may include frequent urination, a sudden urge to urinate, dribbling, a weak urine stream, and having to get up several times during the night.
But the prostate isn’t only related to urination. Some prostate problems can also cause pain during or after ejaculation and difficulties with your sex life. In addition, certain prostate treatments can have sexual side effects, which is why it’s important to talk openly with your doctor before starting or changing medications.
This doesn’t mean that getting up at night to urinate automatically means you have a prostate problem. Diabetes, urinary tract infections, medications, caffeine, and other bladder conditions can cause similar symptoms. That’s why self-medicating or simply lea
ing to live with the problem isn’t a good idea.
For truck drivers, getting enough sleep is especially important. If you have to wake up repeatedly to use the bathroom, you may also end up feeling tired during the day, which can interfere with getting the rest you need before driving.
Talk to a healthcare professional if you notice persistent changes in urination, pain, blood in your urine, or sexual discomfort. If you are unable to urinate at all, seek medical attention immediately.
Talking about prostate health shouldn’t be embarrassing. Catching a problem early can help protect your health, your sleep, and your intimate life.
