If you drive your own truck, work as an owner-operator, or run a trucking company, receiving a letter from the IRS is not something you should put off. Many truck drivers make the mistake of ignoring these notices, assuming they are errors or that the issue will simply go away. The reality is very different: the longer you wait, the greater the penalties, interest, and legal consequences may become.
The IRS usually sends correspondence when it detects differences in reported income, unpaid taxes, or problems with tax filings. In the trucking industry, this happens frequently due to 1099-NEC forms issued by brokers and freight companies, high operating expenses, and quarterly tax payments that are often not handled correctly.
Some of the most common notices truck drivers receive include:
• CP2000: Difference between reported income and income reported to the IRS.
• CP503 and CP504: Outstanding balance notices.
• LT11 or Letter 1058: Final notice before collection actions.
• CP90: Intent to levy notice.
Tax specialists recommend opening the letter immediately and reading it carefully. Every notice explains what the issue is, how much time you have to respond, and what actions may follow. Ignoring the document does not stop the process; on the contrary, it may accelerate liens, levies, or other collection actions.
It is also important to compare the notice with your original tax retu
to verify whether there was an error or unreported income. In many cases, the IRS offers options such as monthly payment plans or special agreements for taxpayers experiencing financial hardship.
Another important point is staying alert to scams. The IRS never makes first contact through phone calls, WhatsApp, or social media, nor does it demand payments through gift cards or immediate wire transfers.
Tax experts recommend keeping all tax-related correspondence for at least three years and seeking professional assistance if the notice is complicated or involves significant debt.
When it comes to taxes, ignoring the problem almost never makes it disappear. In many cases, acting quickly can prevent much more expensive consequences for the truck driver or the business.
