Oil, Air, and Coolant Leaks: Which One Can Put You Out of Service First?

Oil, Air, and Coolant Leaks: Which One Can Put You Out of Service First?

On the road, not all leaks are the same—but any of them can put you out of service at the worst possible time. The problem is that many start small, almost invisible, and by the time you ignore them, it’s already too late. The question is simple: which one shuts you down first?

Air leaks are, without a doubt, the fastest way to get you off the road. In an air brake system, a leak can prevent pressure from reaching a safe level. The result? Your truck won’t move—or worse, the brakes can engage automatically. In Califo
ia, during an inspection by the Califo
ia Highway Patrol, an air leak is immediate grounds for being placed out of service. There’s no long wa
ing—failure happens, and you’re done.

Coolant leaks are more deceptive. At first, the truck keeps running normally, but little by little, the temperature starts to rise. On demanding routes—heavy traffic or long uphill grades like those common in Califo
ia—the engine can overheat quickly. If you don’t act in time, the damage can be severe: cylinder heads, gaskets, or even total engine failure. It may not stop you immediately, but the financial hit can be much worse.

Oil leaks, on the other hand, are silent but destructive. The engine may keep running while slowly losing lubrication. Many drivers spot a stain and decide to “check it later.” That’s a mistake. Without enough oil, inte
al components begin to wear down until a complete failure occurs. It may not stop you right away—but when it does, the repair bill is usually one of the most expensive.

So, which one is worse? An air leak stops you the fastest. A coolant leak can destroy your engine under pressure. And an oil leak can cost you the most if ignored.

On the road, time is money—but ignoring a leak is a gamble against yourself. A quick pre-trip check can be the difference between staying on the road… or being stuck on the shoulder waiting for help.
