Brakes Under Pressure: Are Your Air Lines Ready?

Brakes Under Pressure: Are Your Air Lines Ready?

The life of an air-brake system begins with the main air lines. If those hoses fail, your truck stops being safe—and it can quickly fall out of compliance in Califo
ia.

In Califo
ia, Title 13 of the Code of Regulations requires commercial trucks to undergo regular and systematic inspections to ensure they remain in safe operating condition. This includes the air-brake system and all associated air lines.

State brake regulations also require that air lines and their fittings withstand high pressure without leaks, and that the system include an emergency brake capable of stopping the vehicle if the service brake system fails. If your lines are cracked, loose, or have damaged couplings, that requirement is no longer being met.

Additionally, the Califo
ia Highway Patrol’s BIT program audits companies to confirm they have a proper preventive maintenance schedule in place—and brakes, including the air system, are a key component of these periodic inspections.

Neglecting your air lines isn’t just dangerous—it can also hurt your score during a BIT or DOT inspection.

In practice, what should you be checking?

• Hoses with no cracks, bulges, soft spots, or dry rot

• Clamps and supports that are secure and not rubbing against the chassis or tires

• Tractor–trailer connections (gladhands) with seals in good condition and no leaks

• No oil or contaminants inside the lines, which can damage valves and diaphragms

• Proper system pressure build-up and retention, with a functioning low-air wa
ing, as required by the Califo
ia Commercial Driver Handbook

A blown air line, a slow leak, or an ignored low-pressure alarm can lead to brake loss, serious accidents, and your truck being placed out of service on the road.

At Truck Stop Tire Service, we recommend including air-line inspection in every service stop: listen for leaks, feel the hoses, check the fittings, and fix anything questionable immediately. Replacing a line today is far cheaper—and far safer—than dealing with a crash, a ticket, or an out-of-service order tomorrow.
