The FMSCA will grant about $463 million to states via safety programs to decrease incidents, fatalities, crashes, and injuries related to commercial motor vehicles. The Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program gives subsidies to local and state law enforcement agencies for:
- Investigating motor carriers regarding safety issues;
- Inspecting buses and trucks considering safety criteria;
- Auditing new transportation companies (buses and trucks).
This subsidy is a response to the increase of accidents implicating large trucks in 2021. According to the NTHSA, from 2020 to 2021, the rise of fatalities involving trucks with a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds was 13%.
This grant is part of the resources available from the infrastructure law of the President`s Bipartisan. This year, the funding to avoid accidents with buses or trucks across the U.S is 52% higher than the year before. The government is considering increasing road safety and saving lives.
