Myth or Reality? Hepatitis is transmitted through oral sex

Myth or Reality? Hepatitis is transmitted through oral sex

It’s a reality, trucker friends. Although the possibility of transmitting hepatitis C through unprotected oral sex is low, especially in monogamous relationships, it remains a possibility for this liver disease to be transmitted orally. It could also happen through other unprotected sexual activities like vaginal or anal sex. The hepatitis C virus is present in the blood, but it is also in certain body fluids, like semen, which is generally the main transmitter in sexual intercourse.

Truck drivers should be careful and take precautions in their sexual relations, especially when there is blood involved. Hepatitis C can be transmitted from one individual to another through contact with infected blood. If you happen to have oral sex with a person who has hepatitis C and that sexual partner has some type of crack or bleeding in the gums or lips then the truck driver has a higher risk of receiving the disease, especially when it meets their own blood.

Body signs that increase the chances of infection:

  • Bleeding in the gums or mouth
  • Menstruation
  • Herpes labialis
  • Throat infection
  • Lips with cracks
  • Genital herpes
  • Genital warts

Factors that increase the risks of contagion:

  • Truckers who have multiple sexual partners
  • Sexual partner who is going through an infection caused by hepatitis C
  • Truck drivers that do not use condoms as a measure of sexual protection, mainly in the case of having sex with different partners
  • Truckers who already have some type of sexually transmitted disease
  • The practice of extreme sexual games
  • Sex with a person who has a high viral load

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), Hepatitis C is a disease that kills about 400,000 people annually and has infected more than 71 million people worldwide. Although it is not yet possible to be vaccinated against this virus, all truck drivers can take preventive measures to avoid and reduce the risks of getting sick, as well as avoid transmitting the disease if they have it, such as:

  • The use of condoms to prevent this and other diseases when performing oral, vaginal or anal sex.
  • Reduce the number of sexual partners.
  • Perform regular medical tests to verify if they have any sexual illness and act on time.
