Last July, a new speed limiter mandate, was introduced in the U.S Senate. The bill comes with the main objective of making the DOT agency establish that all heavy trucks need be equipped with speed limiters and a setting of 65 mph as the speed limit for those vehicles. This is in order to prevent fatal crashes and incidents and busy roadways.
Sen. Jonny Isakson`s bill would require new trucks to be equipped with the speed limiters set to the maximum speed of 65mph. The bill also mentions that other trucks must adapt to this requirement too.
Isakson affirms that this type technology related to speed limiters already exists in current trucks and no additional cost would be necessary to implement their use. And with this measure the number of people involved in fatal accidents could be reduced. Canada`s speed limiter program took effect 10 years and it has seen a decrease of accidents involving trucks by 73%. According to the Truck Alliance in 2018, there have been more than 140,000 deaths and victims involving heavy vehicle accidents.
