Air quality has a very big impact on an engine´s performance as well as its deterioration. Generally, a diesel engine requires 15,000 liters of air for each liter of fuel consumed. It is essential that air filtration is performed correctly, thus protecting the engine from particles of pollutants.
If more abrasive particles come in contact with the engine, its lifetime will be jeopardized, as it can be destroyed with just 1 gram of dust per CV. That´s the reason truckers need to be worried about having high quality air filters in their trucks; they have to protect their engine from harmful air, which can eventually damage it.
Thus the air filter plays a very important role restricting polluting particles from getting into the engine, because if the engine becomes congested it will have to make extra effort to introduce air, reducing its power and consuming more fuel.
For the truckers who need to visualize the lifetime of their air filter in an indicator, they should put the restriction indicator on the clean side of the filter housing. Keep in mind that a proper air filtration solution for each truck will depend on the requirements of each work environment and the fact that the vehicle has more or less contact with dust.
When the dust concentration is low there should be a light air filtration system, consisting basically of a cleaning air system with just one step. And in the cases where the dust concentration is high, it will be necessary to use an air filtration solution with more stages, which includes pre-cleaners, air filters, and restriction indicators. This second process will help to increase the lifetime of the air filter.
The symptoms related to air filtration, which all truckers should always keep in mind, is the increase in fuel consumption, engine performance reduced, and premature clogging of air filters. Detecting these symptoms in time makes proper truck maintenance possible and increases the engine lifespan.
