It is necessary to pay special attention to this part of a heavy vehicle because it has a very important role to transmit the force generated by the engine to make the truck move. To help you increase the life of your transmission, save you unnecessary expenses and time in repairs, we will explain some basic elements about your transmission:

- It is composed of an input shaft, a layshaft and a mainshaft, and also by a gear shift mechanism. It must always be correctly set in the neutral position, so changing a gear can be done safely and easily.

- If there is a failure in the neutral position, caused by some error in changing a gear, it is possible to cause damage in the part.

- Be aware of the following signs that indicate damage in the gearbox:

  1. Gear lever disconnection
  2. Difficulty changing a gear
  3. Loud sounds of the metal’s bumps

- A heavy-duty vehicle's gearbox is built for lubrication intervals of up to 350,000 miles or 3 years.

The best way of increasing the durability and preventing damage is through preventive maintenance which is a 90 minutes process. If it is not done, the oil begins to lose its density, turning the working part dry, reheating the interior and consequently breaking internal elements and damaging the part.

What it is a preventive maintenance?

  1. Oil leakage check - checking visually if there is any oil leak in the pipes, oil cooler, filter connection hoses and also on the coupling surfaces of the transmission box.
  2. Oil level check - With the truck parked on a flat surface, with the brake lever on, the engine stopped and once the oil is cold you should:

- Remove the plug and check if there is oil to the lower surface of the plug.

- If the oil level is not enough, more oil should be added to the bottom surface of the plug.

- If it is necessary to change the oil, you should remove the filling plug, and then take out the drain plug, letting the used oil out until the container is empty.

- To refill the gearbox, you must insert the drain plug and introduce new oil. Once the process is complete, inspect the oil level again.
