End of the World for Undocumented Truckers

End of the World for Undocumented Truckers

This is a result of the new DMV requirements. Since May 10, 2017, both renewal and application for a commercial license requires proof of citizenship or legal residency. This poses a big problem for undocumented drivers, whose current licenses will soon expire and won´t be able to renew them. Many obtained their current licenses years ago due to fewer requirements, such as a work permit and a social security number.

Drivers who request a commercial license or want to renew it, must present information regarding:

  • Their legal presence in the US or;
  • Permanent residence or;
  • Proof of citizenship

The documents that can be presented by the applicants to prove this information are:

  • A birth certificate copy
  • Valid US passport
  • Valid permanent residence card
  • Valid foreign passport - with an approved form 1-94
  • A document authorizing the valid work permit

To prove the residence the driver must provide documents such as:

  • Proof of mortgage payment
  • Rental agreement
  • Invoices related to the payment of services
  • Employment documents
  • Medical documents

Unfortunately, the AB60 law, which authorizes undocumented individuals in California to drive, is only applicable to automobiles, not commercial vehicles. Undocumented truck drivers are concerned about unemployment, their future and assets acquired so far. For many it is the end of the world.
