ELD Mandate in force: Learn and get ready

April 1 was the deadline by CSA for drivers to comply with the ELD mandate. Now companies and drivers, besides receiving warnings, will also be imposed CSA points. Also, trucks will be sent to penalty box for up to 10 hours.

  • Below find advices to try to avoid any penalties:
  • Make sure you know whether you have an AOBRD or an ELD.
  • Provide device documentation if requested.
  • You must be able to operate your device and able to transfer data, if not you will be treated as lack of carrying the proper equipment onboard.
  • Carry a cab card and enough log sheets for the eight days of RODS in case the ELD or the AOBRD fails or in case there is an inspection and you can confirm you have a paper log back up. The eight day rule also applies for blank forms of driver’s hours of service for recording
  • Ability to transfer recent data produced to an inspector, electronically, on a print out or in an email.
  • Bring an electronic user manual with instructions for the device with help screens in case is required by enforcement.
  • Ability to report malfunctions and to keep track of procedures during these malfunctions.
  • Carry ELD cards in the cabs if carrier invested in ELD. Same thing with AOBRDs but with AOBRD cards.
  • Those trucks operating under ELD Mandate exemptions need to bring the documents backing up their exemption.
