COMPLETE AIR BRAKES MAINTENANCE – PART 2

In the previous edition we explained the importance of having trucker`s brakes in perfect condition, conducting a complete check, disassembling and reassembling the braking system.  We already described the most important steps regarding disassembly, now it´s time to talk about the reassembly stage:

  1. Choose and make the installation of the most correct shoe and material. Pick the appropriate friction material relying on your duty cycle, operating terrain, application and type of loads. If necessary, visit your supplier to clarify any doubts. Please, consider that many shoes are very similar. To avoid problems use the same type of shoe that you extract.
  2. It is recommended to substitute the anchor pin bushing, the cam bushing, oil seals, and all shoe attaching parts. If you reuse any part, make sure to clean it with solvent, rinse it and let it dry. The replacement of bearings, cups and s-cams should be done as necessary.
  3. Brake rollers, bushing area of camshafts and anchor pins should be lubricated. Make sure that only the bearing area of the roller contacting the shoe web is lubricated and never the face of the roller.
  4. If it is necessary to make the installation of new drums do not mix heavy-duty drums with light, because this may cause an irregular brake shoe wear.
  5. The lubrication of axle spindle is necessary to assure bearings to slide on without difficulty. Follow the manufacturer`s specifications for adjusting the bearing. It is important to assure the use of the correct bearing grease or hub oil.
  6. Continually regulate the brake adjusters of all the wheels in your CMV. Verify the manufacturer’s specifications and repeat the identical procedure for every brake adjusters of the truck.
  7. Examine the spring brakes searching for seal leakage and the brake hoses that lead to chambers looking for cracks. And make a replacement if it is necessary.
  8. Inspect the brake release. It is possible to install a quick-release glad-hand on the vehicle, in order to speed air exhaust.
  9.  Check the spring breaks to see if the rubber dust plug was correctly installed.
  10. Make sure to not mix the size of the brake chamber in case you needed to replace any.
  11. A road test after the reassembly process is imperative to inspect the brake performance.
  12. Double check chambers and brake adjusters for correct and proportionate stroke.
